Nevertheless, there are practices being put in place to increase the reefs future resilience. Overall, it would seem that farming practices operating so close to the coast need to be closely monitored as to minimize the amounts of herbicides, pesticides and sediment that flow onto the reef, which also have an impact on the crown of thorn starfish. On the other hand, the reefs long term problem is climate change. Although, this is not just a local problem that affects the reef, but a global threat. However, industries operating off the reef have been taking actions to reduce their carbon footprint. Coral reefs are one of the most affected systems by ocean acidification.
Marine Protected Area Governance - UCL – University College London
Remind students that Marine Protected Areas MPAs are areas of the marine environment that are protected by laws in order to preserve their natural and cultural resources. In order to establish and manage MPAs, case studies are created. Ask: What are case studies? Case studies also describe threats to the area and explain why the area should be protected. The goals of such protection focus on restoring ecological balance to the area.
Assign student pairs a Marine Protected Area to study. Briefly review what Marine Protected Areas and case studies are and why they are important. Explain that they are used to establish and manage marine areas that contain important natural and cultural resources. Divide students into pairs. Have student pairs research and create a case study for their assigned Marine Protected Area.
Activate prior knowledge by reviewing the purpose and importance of Marine Protected Areas. Have a whole-class discussion. Ask: What is the purpose of a MPA? Why or why not?
