India has the federal structure of government where the President is the 'Head' of the State. The President of India is elected for a term of five years by an electoral college comprising members of federal and state legislatures. The Election Commission of India ECI is a constitutional authority under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Law and Justice , Government of India is responsible for the conduct of elections at the national level, state level and local level municipality, panchayat etc. It is a permanent constitutional body. Two additional Commissioners were appointed to the commission for the first time on 16 October on the eve of the General Election , but they had a very short tenure, ending on 1 January The commission is served by its secretariat located in New Delhi. At the district and constituency levels, the District Magistrates in their capacity as District Election Officers , Electoral Registration Officers and Returning Officers perform election work.
Role of Election Commission. One of the most important features of a democratic polity is elections at regular intervals. Elections constitute the signpost of democracy. These are the medium through which the attitudes, values and beliefs of the people towards their political environment are reflected.
