Earlier this month, the Program for International Student Assessment announced that the performance of American teenagers in reading and math has been stagnant since Other recent studies revealed that two-thirds of American children were not proficient readers , and that the achievement gap in reading between high and low performers is widening. We asked students to weigh in on these findings and to tell us their suggestions for how they would improve the American education system. Our prompt received nearly comments. This was clearly a subject that many teenagers were passionate about. They offered a variety of suggestions on how they felt schools could be improved to better teach and prepare students for life after graduation.
How would you characterize the homework you get? Although surveys show that the amount of time our children spend on homework has risen over the last three decades, American students are mired in the middle of international academic rankings: 17th in reading, 23rd in science and 31st in math, according to results from the Program for International Student Assessment released last December. The authors did note a positive effect for math homework. Students: Tell us how effective you think your homework is. What kinds of assignments seem pointless? Which ones are confusing or frustrating? Which ones are most engaging and interesting?
